All the answers to your questions about cake smash photoshoots with YourFamilyDeserveThis Photography Studio.
Do I need to provide a cake?
Yes, due to concerns over allergies and intolerances, we ask you to bring a cake to your baby’s photoshoot. You will know which flavours they like… chocolate sponge or vanilla for example. The squishier the icing the better.
2. What should my baby wear for the Cake Smash?
We have a blue nappy cover set and a frilly pink one that you are welcome to borrow.
Other ideas are a body suit with ‘I am One’ on it , a simple style dress or a pair of dungarees.
3. How does the background look?
We have a wipe clean vinyl backdrop for our cake smash sessions, this makes it much easier to clear away afterwards.
The size is limited, so if you do decide to bring any other or extra decorations along, be aware that they need to fit into this space.
Standard size helium balloons are fine, but large foil number ones, will not fit.
4. What colour decorations do you have?
Generally we will have a ‘Tones of Pink and White’ set of paper pom-poms for girls and a ‘Tones of Blue and White paper spheres’ for boys. Each set up has colour co-ordinated bunting, white number one and white cake stand.
With paper decorations, it all depends on the stock we have in at the time, colours and design can vary a little, but give a similar over all colour scheme.
We can mix and match if you prefer…
5. Do you have a cake stand?
Yes we have quite a sturdy cake stand that you can see in our photographs. Your cake will be removed from it’s board, tray, plate and placed on the stand, that way if baby tips it over, it will hopefully stick and can make a great shot and not go sliding out of the scene.
It’s the perfect height if your one year old decides to eat cake right off the stand!
6. How can I help?
Most important be prepared to get stuck in and have some fun! Bring spare clothes!
At this milestone, your baby will be more emotionally aware, for some this means they are more confident and jump straight in and for others it can be time where they are more wary of strange people an environments.
If your little one is used to group situations with new people, likes messy play and responds to songs, silly noises and can do actions then we can all get involved to encourage those smiles and interactions.
If your little one is quieter, more wary of strangers and new environments and isn’t keen on messy textures, then we will ask you to lead with encouraging smiles and interactions. You are more familiar to your baby and know what they respond to best.
For any baby, it can help to have a little bit of a practice before your photoshoot. A slice of cake or a fairy cake with squishy icing can introduce them to the textures, tastes and smells. You can also work out which flavour gets the best response.
We have seen all the reactions under the sun from the… I’m not touching that! … to the faceplant… to completely wading in and pulling the cake apart, with pieces flying everywhere!
However your baby decides to explore their cake on the day, we’ll be sure to capture their adventure.
7. Should I bring baby wipes and a towel to get clean afterwards?
We will provide a bowl of water with or without some Sainsbury’s little ones sensitive bath in, a flannel and a towel for getting your little one clean.
By all means bring your own wipes, towel etc if you wish.
IMPORTANT! If you (adults) are planning to go out somewhere lovely after your photoshoot, remember to bring a spare set of clothes in case you end up with a cakey cuddle from your little one.
8. What do I do with the cake when it’s finished?
Often there is half an edible cake left, that you can take home with you. If you would prefer that we dispose of it, then that’s fine too.
9. When should I book in my baby’s cake smash photoshoot?
You can book in as early as you like to secure a session in our busy schedule. Weekends sessions book up months in advance, so book as soon as you can to get the best date for you.
IMPORTANT: Please do avoid baby’s actual birthday or party weekend. This time is usually really busy fro your little one they can become tired and overstimulated with all of the excitement. Sometime during the month before or after their birthday is fine.
10. What happens if I need to reschedule?
If your session is not for some time yet, you can use the reschedule link at the bottom of your booking confirmation email.
If you need us to send this out to you again, please get in touch.
When little ones are poorly they rarely enjoy their photoshoot, if your baby is unwell, let us know as soon as you can. Yes, we will reschedule your photoshoot, but if you have booked a session at a weekend it may be a little while before we can fit you in. Weekday session (Mon-Thurs) may be available sooner.
If your little one is contagious, please contact us to reschedule.
